Following on from the basic strategy guide to “Jacks Or Better” video poker, here is another easy to follow strategy guide for a different, but equally popular video poker variant, “Deuces Wild”.

The rules of “Deuces Wild” video poker are basically the same as any other video poker game, but if you are dealt a Two (or “Deuce”, in poker slang) it may be used to represent any other card in the deck. The video poker machine will do this automatically, ensuring that you are always paid for the best possible holding. Because of the wildcards vastly increasing a player’s chances of a return, the minimum hand requirement to earn a payout is raised, usually to Three of a Kind.

So here is the “Deuces Wild” video poker strategy ladder:

If you are dealt four Deuces

  1. 4 deuces

If you are dealt three Deuces

  1. Pat royal flush
  2. 3 deuces only

If you are dealt two Deuces

  1. Any pat four of a kind or higher
  2. 4 to a royal flush
  3. 4 to a straight flush with 2 connecting cards, 6-7 or higher
  4. 2 deuces only

If you are dealt one Deuce

  1. Any pat four of a kind or higher
  2. 4 to a royal flush
  3. Full house
  4. 4 to a straight flush with 3 connecting cards, 5-7 or higher
  5. 3 of a kind, straight, or flush
  6. All other 4 to a straight flush
  7. 3 to a royal flush
  8. 3 to a straight flush with 2 connecting cards, 6-7 or higher
  9. Deuce only

If you are dealt no 2 (deuce)

  1. 4 or 5 to a royal flush
  2. Made three of a kind to straight flush
  3. 4 to a straight flush
  4. 3 to a royal flush
  5. Pair
  6. 4 to a flush
  7. 4 to an outside straight (Open-ended straight draw)
  8. 3 to a straight flush
  9. 2 to an inside straight, except missing deuce
  10. 2 to a royal flush, J,Q high

As with the “Jacks Or Better” strategy table, simply look up all possible ways to play the hand and choose the highest from the “ladder”. Do not play any hand that doesn’t feature on the ladder. On the right “Deuces Wild” machine, this strategy will actually pay out at 100.71%, if correctly followed.

So let’s say the video poker machine dealt you 6h, 2c 7h, 5h, Qh:

Your options here are to hold the pat heart flush (remember the 2c is wild) or to hold the four to a straight flush. As the three connecting cards are 5-7 or greater, this is a better play than holding the pat flush – it is higher on the “Deuces Wild” video poker strategy ladder. Simple!

Best of luck and enjoy playing “Deuces Wild”!
